Dermal filler “Liquid Facelift” Treatment overview

We all know time can take its toll on our skin. Repeated expressions can cause wrinkles. Initially, these wrinkles will only be seen when the muscles contract like when you smile or frown, and are referred to as dynamic wrinkles. As time goes by your skin gets progressively creased, so they can even be seen when your face is at rest. These are referred to as static wrinkles. You may be familiar with injections that treat dynamic wrinkles (muscle relaxant injections) by relaxing muscles responsible for wrinkle causing facial expressions. A dermal filler is a smooth injectable gel and is injected below the skin’s surface by our doctors at Esteem Aesthetics to literally ‘fill in’, ‘plump up’ and ‘lift’ static facial wrinkles and folds that are present at rest, creating a natural and more refreshed facial expression.

Frequently Asked questions

Where Do facial folds and wrinkles come from?

As you age, your skin also loses volume and elasticity. In addition, there may be a depletion of fat around the eyes, cheeks and forehead. This process occurs because natural substances such as collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid that provide the skin with structure and volume decrease with age. This, together with environmental factors such as exposure to sunlight, smoking and stress contribute to the creation of wrinkles and folds. Individuals differ but generally ageing over the years becomes evident in the areas shown below. The names given to each treatment are labelled.

How do Dermal FIllers work?

Our three recommended dermal fillers are all made up of polysaccharides (complex sugar chains) and it is chemically identical to the substance found naturally in the skin of humans and many other living creatures. In its natural state in the skin it creates volume and forms an important component of the ‘ground substance’ – the medium in which the collagen and elastin fibres are found. Reassuringly, the product does not have an animal origin. Although manufactured synthetically, it is chemically and structurally identical to its natural counterpart in your skin.

What are they used for?

  1. Facial Wrinkles, furrows & lines

  2. Depressed injury or surgical scars

  3. Acne scars

How long will the correction last?

This very much depends on the individual and where it is used. Although 3-5 months was the original forecasted duration, most experienced injectors have found that the average duration for many patients is actually much longer and not uncommonly in the order of 6-12 months.

How is it done?

A treatment takes about 20-30 minutes and the correction is immediate. As it contains no local anaesthetic, we recommend a local anaesthetic nerve block or local anaesthetic cream to make your treatment more comfortable. You may have some mild puffiness around the treated areas but this usually settles within 48 hours.

When should they not be injected?

  • In the presence of any active skin infection e.g. active acne

  • During pregnancy or lactation
